Blues Alley "Summer
Jazz Camp"
Download our Summer Jazz Camp 2007 Brochure
Imagine for a moment in your
mind's eye an idyllic setting hidden inside an urban forest, nestled deep
inside a National Park and all within our Nation's Capitol. The name of this
idyllic setting is the Carter Barron Amphitheater and the name of the urban
forest is Rock Creek Park in the geographic center of northwest Washington, DC.
Carter Barron is appropriately named after one of Washington's preeminent
philanthropists and his namesake has been home to many of our nation's most
venerable jazz artists spanning a period of over six decades.
The ghosts of Duke and Ella and
Basie have all been conjured on this pristine outdoor venue whence they
performed in the era of the big band. Today Carter Barron serves as the summer
home of the Blues Alley Youth Orchestra. Each summer over a five-week term
youth from all over our city come to learn and share and grow through jazz
education and further perform on some of our city's most prestigious
stages.
The Blues Alley "Summer Jazz
Camp" for kids at Carter Barron is a free program that benefits the children,
the community and the city through a series of public performances at Farragut,
Franklin and McPherson Squares, Blues Alley and the annual culminating concert
at Carter Barron. In between there are workshops, master classes, study tours
and daily rehearsals.
